Keyboard washable??

Ok somone just told me, and I am sure they are pulling my leg

that you can put your Keyboard in the top shelf of a dishewasher to wash it.

C'mon that isn't true right? Not that I am going to check - but he told me I can put my wireless keyboard in the top shelf, and let dry for 4-5 days.

I just can't believe this

cp32 11-10-2006 02:39 AM

wha????? I never heard that one before. ROTFLMAO! I just use a can of compressed air to blow out any dust. A q Tip with windex on it for the little places. Paper Towel & Windex on the larger areas. ?? Dishwasher? I dont own one. So I wouldnt know . I dont think I would try it either lmao! If anyone would know the men here would lol

I always go by common sense rule ... electric + water =

BAD news lmao! I could be wrong :P

I know they make keyboards now that are able to be washed but they are made of a special kind of flexible plastic.

I would think if you put your keyboard in the washer it would short circuit or at least run that risk since water would no doubt get into the wiring and the board of the KB

manthing 11-10-2006 04:21 AM

i have used soapy-sponge on th KB, then wiped it dry with a paper towel ... and no problems.

but i would advise against doing this.

maybe damp cloth is the next best thing to use?

Simply not true as I have replaced many keyboards here at work due to accidental water, coffee, soda spillage that shorted the keyboard, and caused some of them to stick and deemed unusable.

I have keys to his apartment..I was thinking of cleaning his kitchen and tossing his keyboard in, saying "tidyed up for you, don't worry i added the kyeboard!"

you have to buy the special holder for dishwasher cleaning. its kinda like the one made for the hat. but its for the keyboards.

You CAN Put Your Keyboard in the Dishwasher
Published May 29th, 2005 in General
Last Monday, I spilled beer on my keyboard and received the Dishwasher advice from two very tech-savvy people.

Today, I can report that not only will the keyboard come out clean, but it will probably work once it dries completely. Every key on the keyboard works and feels just right - the Caps Lock light even works! This ‘hack’ is not for the weakhearted, and I would probably avoid putting a $100+ keyboard in the dishwasher. But if you don’t have any other options, it’s a pretty good bet.

Exactly what I did:

disconnected my USB keyboard from my computer
dumped out the spilled beverage
placed keyboard in dishwasher (normal cycle)
added soap to the reservoir (I used Electrasol)
closed the dishwasher and turned it on
I was advised to AVOID USING the heated dry cycle - 20 minutes too late
removed keyboard from dishwasher once the cycle was complete
popped ALL the keys off to allow the keyboard to completely dry (either draw, write down where the keys go, or take a picture so you can put ‘em all back in the right place)
leaned my keyboard vertically against a wall and allowed it to dry for 5 days
replaced all the keys, plugged the keyboard back in and tested every key to make sure it worked
I had to live without a keyboard for FIVE days and it wasn’t easy. Typing consisted of double-clicking the Roman character set in OS X’s Character Palette - letter by letter. Not easy, especially since there is no Enter Key or Space. So, I got creative with right-click menus and Copy/Paste.

Right now, I can hear geek-owned dishwashers across the land powering up.

I have heard of people doing this, but when a decent keyboard can be had for $10.00 why screw with it?

SavageAmusement 11-11-2006 05:59 PM

my keyboard.mouse is wireless and was i think..59.00 or something came with a battery charger and 2 batteries -

so I am not messing with it whatsoever-

But, reading the above..even if it IS possible--let air dry for 5 days?

who the helk doen'st need their pc for 5 days?

great article tho konfusion at least it cleared my friend isn't buts- someone else had thought or tried it first
