An old video game system
 

Does anyone remember an old video game system called an Atari I believe it is spelled. Well my nephew had one-it had horrid graphics, but I was visiting them and played it-it was kinda fun- does anyone know where I could find one

why not get a atari emulator for the pc?
you can easily find many emulators on the net (for atari 800, 2600, ST etc).

Which Atari? There were quite a few models. The most popular model was the 2600, but he could just as easily have had the 5200 or even an older 800. It really depends on what years you remember playing it.

I have my original 2600 still. In fact, I have a backup, just in case. :)

I don't think the graphics were too awful, on some games. It was about fun back then, not whiz-bang graphics and life-like blood and guts. I still the family Pong system (Magnavox Odyssey).

eBay is an easy source of these.

Sears Tele-Games System was one name. (Or Telegames with no hyphen.)
Atari 2600 was the other name.
The Sears version was actually more prevalent. Same system.

Emulators on the computer are nice to use, but if you're not adept at computers, it can be frustrating. It's all homebrew software, with dodgy copies of the games. It's far from dummy-friendly software. Plus you can't use a joystick or paddle -- keyboarding isn't any fun for me, and a modern joypad/stick just isn't the same.

basically, you can run a emulator software on your PC that will mimic the behaviour of the other operating system, like a atari 800 or whatever.

if it all works out, you then play the games you want on your PC through the emulator.
this is a cheap alternative to buying the actual atari hardware and games.

but as LS wrote, you have to quite competent at using your PC and software.

why not try it out, just for the hell of it?

use google and type "atari 800 emulator", or whatever model you're looking for and just read those sites on how to use the emulator.

well to be honest I am not a video game person an old friend and I used to play my Nintendo 64 with a Xena game-took many bad memories. So when I went to my sister's house I saw it connected to the tv so I played it-it was pac man and space invaders. It was really fun. It was a big greyish black box I said itl looks old, and her husband said he had it when he was a child lol It took rather large square games I do remember that lol

Not sure how far you are willing to drive but try Video Game Cavern on Wade Hampton Blvd in Taylors, SC. If you're up to driving a bit farther try Smiley's Flea Market in Fletcher, NC. I know they carry the systems you're looking for, there are several dealers there that carry an aray of older systems. I did a search on Barnwell, SC, it's funny because we used to live in Denmark, SC when I was like two years old. I didn't realize you were that close to it, I'm in NC now.

All I know is it was the first one released-I am not a video game person

I might have an extra system (bottom version).
I know I have extra games.
I won't part with any of the controllers, however, you'd have to find those on your own.
I think Sega Master System and Genesis controllers work on the 2600. Need to check.

My top version units are both 6-switch editions.

I belive it was the first one-the only game I played was Pac Man and Asteroid

could you not just ask your brother/sister for any model number or markings on the system?

I'd mention that both images are of the same system, an Atari 2600, but different editions. That both play all the same games, use same controllers, etc.

Pacman was one of the most released games. I have several games like this, with 2-4x copies. I don't need all those. There were so many ET games left over that, according to urban legend, Atari dug a hole in the desert and dumped them in.

This is a unique version of Pacman. It doesn't really look or sound anything like the arcade edition. It's my least favorite version, to be honest. I never play it on the Atari. I play the two-play cowboy and tank/boat shooter games instead, with family members.

Speaking of emulators, is is true you can use those to play old arcade games on your computer with an emulator? If so, what about the arcade games that came later, not really the first generation ones? I'm referring to games like Double Dragon and WWF Superstars, maybe Wrestlefest or Vendetta, I liked mostly brawlers and sports games back in the day and can't find arcades that have them anymore. And if I play them, will I be able to use continues, like in the arcade, you know where you had to put in another quarter or token and press the start button to continue? How would I continue if playing with an emulator?

Okay, but a couple of more things before I check the links. What would I use to play them? My keyboard? And would there be infinite continues?

Can these games be put on a disc? And if they can, can they be played on an X Box 360 or PS3? Or would it have to be modded somehow for that to be possible? I'd love to play some old arcade games on a console. Does anyone sell stuff like that, discs with a bunch of old arcade games that play on consoles or modded consoles with discs that play old arcade games with your controller?
