i converted a b&w movie from bluray to dvd.

it is meant to be a fullscreen movie, ie 4:3 format.

however the software converted it to 853 x 480. hence it has black borders on the sides:

so my Q is: how do i resize the movie to 720 x 480?

alternatively, what software player will resize the image to (as close to) 4:3 on the fly?

ta.

Don't use that software again. It screwed up. What did you use?
I'd go back to the Blu-ray, and try again. Converting the first botched attempt will yield lower quality than starting over.

i used vso blu-ray converter.

more info: bdinfo states the bluray movie is 1080p, 23.976 fps, 16:9, high profile 4.1

so is the issue that the bluray b&w is 16:9 in the first place?
they've mastered it to be anamorphic?
even though it really is meant to be 4:3.

hence, how to get from that to a 4:3 dvd?
what software will do a proper conversion?

ta

There's more than one way to skin a cat. So let's talk skinning cats...

Have you considered copying this to a DVD+R DL (DVD9), while keeping the Blu-ray structure, as "movie-only". You can do that.
My bigger question is why you're trying to convert a BDMV to DVD-Video. That's not a fun process.
I ask because there may be a better way to solve your issue, without doing what you've been trying to do thus far.

If the source video is 16:9, it's likely matted 4:3 with pillar bars. You'd have to crop it for true 4:3.

the m2ts file containing the movie is 16 MB.

i'm not overly fussed with having a bluray version of this movie - hence a drop to dvd quality is fine.

so, having got to the converted video, what's the easiest / simplest software app that will crop the pillar bars?

i've found a solution that works for me.

using VLC, you can view the movie in "crop" mode.
when playback starts, select Video -> Crop -> 4:3 (or whatever crop settings you desire).

VLC will then zoom in and fill the screen with the video - hence removing the pillar boxes / black bars.

so, query answered in a roundabout manner.
