Thundering across the stars, to save the universe from the Monster Minds!
Jayce searches for his father, to unite the magic root, and lead his Lightning League to victory over the changing form of Saw Boss! Wheeled Warriors explode into battle! Lightning Strikes!
When a solar flare wreaks havoc on his botanical experiments, Jayce's father is forced to flee from his accidental creations: Saw Boss and his band of ruthless mutated plant life called the Monster Minds. Now it's up to Jayce, joined by the valiant Lightning League, to reunite with his father and combine the two halves of the magic Root amulet-the only object capable of purging the universe of Saw Boss and his army forever.

In any case- this is a very interesting snapshot of 80s cartoon/toy tie-ins. The thing was- the Wheeled Warriors toys never game with a Jayce, Audric, Gillean, Herc, Flora or Oon figure. The figurines and stories on the packaging were the Lightning League as it must have existed before the WW cartoon- all the main characters were created separate from the toys to give a more science fantasy feel to the show. Joe Straczynski and Larry DiTillo of Babylon 5 (And JMS also worked on Captain Power and The Real Ghostbusters) took a neat-looking but lore-poor toy line and turned it into something immersive and character-driven. The visuals are incredible- star-spanning vines and space galleons and wizards and animated armor suits and flying fish and... well, just pick up the DVDs. They're not spendy (as of 12 FEB 19) and they're well worth it.
They are bound by the standards and practices stuff of the 80s, so keep that in mind. JMS delivers as best he can within those strictures. An adult with no nostalgic connection to the material might not find it as amazing as I do, but it is a cartoon with a remarkable number of interesting characters not cut from the same cloth as most heroes- ok, maybe Herc is Han Solo by way of Shipwreck, but I digress. Just check it out. It's worth it. And while you're at it- take a look at the first two seasons of The Real Ghostbusters and the sadly single season of Captain Power.
I was just expecting a decently encoded DVD of the series, but I was pleasantly surprised that there is a digital version for streaming! It's through the Spree service -- definitely not as popular as Netflix or Amazon, but nice to know there is this option so I can safely store the DVD away in my collection, while still watching the show on demand.
It really deserved a lot more popularity than it got, and like many of those fantastic Saturday morning cartoons from the 80's they hold up surprisingly well.
I've been enjoying watching this show with my kids and reliving a bit of my childhood. This is one of those terrific little known treasures from the 80's you too should watch.

The large number of negative and 1 star reviews really do this amazing series a massive disservice. Rating a product 1 star because it does not play on your device is not a problem of the product, which clearly states this is a Region 1 release.
Other comments about the poor picture quality also seem incredibly harsh. Yes it's not in the kind of crystal clear sharpness as new cartoons, but this was made in the 80's and wasn't ever intended to be viewed on HD TV's the size of a small cinema screen.
The set I received is great quality and looks amazing. It's also great finally been able to watch and enjoy the entire series again.
The episodes are just as good and fun as I remembered and this set definitely lives up to the memory and nostalgia which can't always be said for other series I've rematched and I remembered as been much better than they actually were on the rewatch.
Admittedly some episodes are better than others, but that can be said for any series.
If you have a fond memory of this series I can't recommend this set highly enough.
So sit back and watch the Lightening League keep us all safe from the Monster Minds.
