The DVD set opens with "The Wedsworth-Townsend Act", the two hour pilot directed (and produced) by the famous Jack Webb; I loved that the opening episode featured appearances from Martin Milner and Kent McCord in their "Adam-12" characters (I also loved the subplot about "Adam-12", another Webb production, later in the season), and immediately set about establishing who the characters were, what the interpersonal dynamics between them are, and what the equipment does as Johnny Gage (Randolph Mantooth) gets recruited for the new paramedic program by instructor Roy DeSoto. The hospital heavies are also fleshed out, starting with the domineering and somewhat arrogant Dr. Kelly Brackett (Robert Fuller), the easygoing Dr. Joe Early (Bobby Troup), and Troup's real life wife (and Jack Webb's ex-wife!) nurse Dixie McCall (Julie London), the calm foundation of Rampart Hospital. There's some legislative drama and a major emergency at the end which requires Brackett to make a timely decision he is really conflicted about, but it works well. The pilot is a bit slow compared to the later shows, but it firms up Roy and Johnny as a dedicated team in the brand new Station 51.
The 11 episodes of the first season are all good and involve three or four emergencies per episode and a lot of interpersonal character development that gets better as the show progresses (I love the little snippets of characterization that run through the series: Johnny's obsession with practical jokes; Roy being a terrible cook, Johnny's invention of a new type of poker game, etc.) From a perspective four decades later, some things will really pop out at you: cigarettes being smoked in hospital hallways, no HIPAA considerations whatsoever, buying groceries for the entire fire station for $9.03, etc., but the risk and drama still play as well as they did in 1972.
If you liked "Emergency!" when it was on television, give it another look; I think you'll be thrilled with how it stands up today; if you have never seen the show, this is a great place to start and I recommend the set highly.
Believe me, I have e-mailed Universal plenty of times requesting
they release this great series.
Not too many tv shows can make the claim of influencing something as important as Emergency did. I don't know a firefighter who has not watched this show, or was influenced by
it to become a paramedic or firefighter.
I too wish Universal would do the discs single sided and extra's
would be great, but the clarity was good, compared to the recorded tapes we had from tvland.
It's great to watch these with no commercials, and also seeing
that extra 6 minutes that tvland cut out for their commercials.
Can't wait for Season 2 to come out.
As for the double sided discs, why not e-mail Universal and let
them know what you want on Season 2, I sure am going to.
This cast was great, and got better and better with each season,
and as most of those who have admitted it, I too loved Johnny
Gage, and the rest of the them were not too bad either.
One problem I have is the DVDs. They all appear to have been turned out by Universal, and are of mediocre quality at best. I never expected the series to have been "remastered", as has been done with some old shows and movies, and "Emergency!" has not been, but it is still watchable. However, on multiple occasions I had problems with the disks "freezing" or locking up entirely. And no, this was not a problem with my DVD player. I'm not going to bother with returning them, as I only missed out on a couple of episodes and it's not worth the hassle. But I will think long and hard before buying any more DVDs produced by Universal.
One thing I saw in one of the "Emergency!" episodes from season five appealed to the history buff in me. In this episode, our protagonists Roy and Johnny are in a Coast Guard helicopter, flying out to some offshore island to save someone from certain doom. At one point, we see the Coast Guard helicopter (a Sikorsky HH-52 Seaguard) buzzing along over the Port of Los Angeles, and what do we see passing in the background but the "Glomar Explorer". Bear in mind this was filmed in 1975, and the Glomar Explorer had only completed its intended mission the year before, the full story of which did not come out for decades. If you don't know what the Glomar Explorer was, look it up. It's an interesting Cold War story.
Overall, "Emergency!" is a worthwhile purchase, just watch out for the disk quality.

With the action interchanging between Rampart General Hospital & Fire Station 51 in Los Angeles, each 50-minute episode is a realistic account of the everyday duties of the firemen/paramedics of "51" as they attend a variety of incidents (besides fires)...and the day-to-day workings of "Rampart" as the two services communicate & co-operate on a diverse collection of emergencies (some serious, some less so).
What really stands out for me is the show's almost documentary-style presentation, which moves away from the more familiar "Soap" style, with doctors, nurses, fire crews & paramedics having a "realistic" feel, along with all the authentic medical terms & jargon used by the paramedics & hospital staff when communicating via the Biophone from the scene of the incident (there's no drawn-out 'romantic' subplots or over-dramatised action etc). With excellent performances from the regular cast & impressive line-up of guest stars, here's a few details on some of the main cast (the characters featured on the front cover of this release!)
***RAMPART GENERAL HOSPITAL***
*DR. KELLY BRACKETT (Robert Fuller)... The 'top' doc at the hospital, Fuller's performance exudes all the required qualities demanded by his character - a strong, authoritative & extremely caring individual with a sense of humour.
*NURSE DIXIE McCALL (Julie London)... More famous for her vocal talents, Ms London is excellent in her role as the matriarchal organising nurse who helps to ensure the continued smooth running of the hospital. Like Dr. Brackett, is serious & very caring but with a dry sense of humour (and isn't she sexy!)
*DR. JOE EARLY (Bobby Troup)... Real-life husband of Julie London. One of my fave characters, Dr. Early is a softly-spoken & very warm individual. A very reassuring presence for patients & staff alike.
***FIRE STATION - SQUAD 51***
*FIREMAN/PARAMEDIC ROY DeSOTO (Kevin Tighe)... Another one of my fave characters. A quietly-spoken individual & superb at his job. Cool in a crisis which has a calming influence on patients. Tighe shares a great rapport & on-screen chemistry with fellow fireman/paramedic John Gage (Randolph Mantooth) with the pair remaining real-life good friends to this day.
*FIREMAN/PARAMEDIC JOHN GAGE (Randolph Mantooth)... Squad 51's would-be lothario, much of the show's humour centres on this character. Gage is a lovesick individual who's love life is a perpetual non-starter, and is often on the receiving end of some good-natured mickey-taking, mostly from fireman Chet Kelly.
*FIREMAN CHESTER "CHET" KELLY (Tim Donnelly)... Although essentially a support player, I felt I had to give a special mention to another one of my fave characters. An individual with a very dry sense of humour - a very likeable character!
Compared to the rest of the series, this first season feels a tad off the pace, as the actors get into the feel of the characters. The show really hits it's stride in the second series, where the actors have nailed their characters. Still an excellent debut season though.
This release contains all eleven, first season episodes, along with the 95-minute pilot TV movie "The Wedsworth-Townsend Act" which sees the battle to introduce - and the implementation of the paramedic service. The 2 discs are double-sided, while the picture & sound quality is generally very good. Apart from the TV movie there are no extras. The soundtrack language is English only, the subtitles are in English & Spanish. The picture quality on further releases of the series is variable - mostly very good but sometimes faded. At worse I found it to be acceptable though.
