While the animation is noticeably cleaner/crisper (however you want to describe it) than the 90s episodes, the fluidity of the animation and the character designs were very true to the original. (I was concerned that like most modern kids shows, there'd be too much frenetic movement and flashing lights and it would make me dizzy, but, with the exception of the brief boat scene, it didn't.)
Where practical, original voice actors were used (Helga is still our Helga!) but even the new actors (the boys playing Arnold, Gerald, etc) really captured their characters and did a fantastic job. They managed to squeeze almost every character that ever appeared in the original series in, in some form or another (it's fun to pause and see who's standing there in crowd scenes!) And of course, the plot delivers the story of Arnold's search for his parents we've been promised for years.
I can only hope this movie means there's hope for more episodes of the series to be made, because I will support them all the way!
The 90s kid in me seriously freaked out when I heard they were making a Hey Arnold! movie 20 years after the show aired. When I was younger, Nickelodeon was always on in our home and Hey Arnold! was one of the shows I frequently watched. I feel like we fans never really got closure with this show, so I was excited when I heard they were making this movie. Sadly, I do not have cable and thus, do not have Nickelodeon, so I had to rent this on Amazon. I'm happy I did, though. I squealed at the end when Helga and Arnold kissed, lol. I love that they were able to bring back some of the original cast. I wish they would bring back shows like this, because what airs on Nickelodeon today isn't nearly as good as the shows that aired in the 90s when I was a kid. Hey Arnold! The Jungle Movie was a breath of fresh air because watching it felt like I was taken back to the 90s all over again. I loved it.
I should add, I already bought this on Vudu but bought it here on Amazon, too, because it's just so good that I want to own it across multiple platforms. I'm basically that gif right now of Fry saying, "SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY" as I throw money at the screen.
