I also played these discs, and the Season One/Two Quincy M.E. discs, on my iMac. They played perfectly. The notorious problems on Disc One, Side One of Dragnet 1967, described by more than one reviewer here, don't exist on the discs Amazon.com sent me. Play them on your computer and you'll see there is nothing wrong with them.
And no, I don't work for Universal Home Video. I live in Oregon, a fair distance from Hollywood.
As far as the content is concerned, I grew up watching these episodes in re-runs for years. By the time the late Sixties rolled around, Jack Webb had become a bitter, angry alcoholic who couldn't deal with the hippies, freaks, weirdoes and dope-smokers who threatened his narrow reactionary view of the world. He complained about kids popping pills and smoking grass while at the same time he was slugging down Crown Royal every night, oblivious to the obvious irony while denying his alcoholism. The color episodes are entertaining mostly for their camp value. I defy anyone to view the "Blue Boy" episode without doubling over with laughter. "Satisfied, Sherlock?"
I'd rather see the Fifties black-and-white episodes on DVD, season by season, where Joe Friday actually cracked a smile now and then. Since those episodes are now in the public domain, that'll never happen. The true essence of Dragnet can only be found in the original radio episodes, broadcast on NBC from 1949 to 1951, when Barton Yarborough played Friday's partner as Sgt. Ben Romero. Those programs, and the radio episodes with Ben Alexander as Officer Frank Smith, aired until 1956. They're widely available in mp3 format, and are essential to any true Dragnet fan.
As for the headline? Jack Webb introduced my parents at a weekend party of his back in 1960, when times were even simpler, and Dragnet was still black & white. I'll never not watch it.
