Much like the Bollywood version of He-Man, here's the Bollywood equivalent to Chuck Norris!

This stuff is awesome...

this bloke is called rajinikanth

he is a big star in south indian cinema (tamil cinema which you can argue is india's biggest movie churner though we also have north indian cinema from bollywood)

that particular clip is from rajini's younger days
say 10 or 20 years ago

you can pretty much find very similar clips from a number of indian films nowadays
all formulaic

i find these too boring to watch
seen far too many in my younger days to bother anymore

not dissing the bloke, the movie, or people who enjoy these movies
just stating my own opinion

i think it is safe to say that indian cinema (both southern and northern) were at a peak or at a golden age in the 50s, 60s and perhaps into the early 70s.

best stories, best actors, best music, best songs etc.

since then it has possibly degenerated into formulaic stuff and perhaps into the above choreographed ("silly") action sequences.

and in some films, it has also become very violent and for no other reason than to sell tickets.

i would not be surprised if indian cinema went towards more porn stuff in years to come.

at the end of the day, the dollar / rupee is what counts and if that means showing more porn and violence, then so be it.

all hail the mighty dollar / rupee.

ps the chubby bloke who appears at the end of the clip - his dad (sivaji ganesan) was a great actor. given loads of awards worldwide. he did not have the looks of a "hero". but acting wise he was pretty good. you could argue he was up there with say richard burton and the like.

those days have gone.
new generation get what they want now. action / sex / violence. lashings of it and all coming at you at a frenetic pace.

i'm just glad i have dvds of the old films to enjoy
heck even rajini has starred (and acted) in some pretty darn good movies

ah well, each to their own

there was a bloke called MGR (M.G. Ramachandran) who did similar (but with less technology available so the effects were less exciting to watch) in the 70s.

and in northern cinema, possibly, a guy called Amitabachan also did the same.

i think all this came from what bruce lee started.

was this a good thing or not?
not sure myself.

in southern cinema, before this "fad", MGR was still the hero but like errol flynn in robin hood. a swash-buckling styled hero.

MGR was the first to successfully marriage acting with politics in south india.
eventually becoming the top most politician for the state for 10 years until his untimely death.

MGR was not allowed to act to his full repertoire.
by this i mean that his fans pidgeon-holed him as a hero figure and hence he could only play hero roles, could not die, could not be cast as a dodgy character let alone someone evil and so on.
despite this limitation, he still delivered and for about 30 years broke box office record after record.

even today, 20+ years after his death, and despite vhs / dvds / tv etc, people still flock to the cinema to watch re-runs of his films.

so i pick and choose the best of MGR, Sivaji and even Rajini
and avoid all the "silly" movies

hey i do the same for hollywood movies
just knowing the film stars chuck norris (!) or dolph lundgren is enough for me to avoid it like the plague!

but like i said before, each to their own.
