smurfs cgi

according to toonzone, paramount has 3 CGI movies planned. hopefully this means dvd sets or at least dvds of some kind other than just those for the new movies.

Yeah, fat chance. Smurfs' 2005 DVD set was pulled in 2004 because of unreconcilable rights issues (NBC and WB hate each other, have for 10-15 years now). It is nowhere in sight, not anytime in 2005-2006. Maybe 2007 at best, maybe. This is a long-fought fight, it's been an issue for many years now.

The Smurfs CGI will likely suffer the same silent death that the Mighty Mouse CGI movie got. I like Smurfs, obviously, but the craptacular fad of CGI'ing everything is mostly dead. Voltron 3D, Beast Wars, Reboot, etc ... all dead and buried with the rest of the 1997-2002 stuff in the genre.

What they do now is CGI-enhance cel art. But as most Transformers fans know, that sucks too and does not have a big following inside Japan. I imagine we'll get less and less of it as time goes by, not more. The "new" mindset of CGi is that it needs to be transparent, stuff like The Matrix and even the new Batman Begins flicks. We all know how Hulk flopped, and CGI is why.

Well, I doubt it will get DVDs out anytime soon, but the movie sounds a lot more certain. Daily Variety and Paramount announced it this morning.
