Photoshop CS5 help- transparent background

Im struggling to remove the background of this image with the clouds and the blue background, so all i have is a new transparent layer with just the rangers and the logo that i can import into after affects as a psd file. i tried with the magnetic lasso and always mess it up, is a better or quick way i can do this?

hmm not sure about a quicker method, but i normally use the "polygonal lasso" where you define the sections where you want to cut. the polygonal lasso gives you precise control over your cuts.

or use the masking layer technique.

also look for OnOne Plugin for Photoshop (or another similar plugin). it has "Mask Pro" which allows you to highlight the areas / colours you want to keep, and the areas / colours you want to remove, and then use a brush to erase the bits you don't want.

i think OnOne could be the solution you're looking for as its probably the easiest thing to do.

check out the demo on their site to see its posibilities.

hope this helps.

I would just manually erase out what I don't want on a new layer.
Or use a combination of magnetic lasso, layer masking, and paintbrush/eraser.

There's not a quicker way -- not really.

It works perfect, thanks for the help manthing. i already got my menu done alot quicker then i thought with the program. thanks again.

hey, great that it worked for you.

i think in the pic above, there is a clear enough distinction between the sky and the character's uniforms for Mask Pro to work well.

if the colours were closer, then maybe Mask Pro would struggle a bit.

anyway, it worked in this case, so job done.
