Verification with Nero 6
 

Every so often I get a verification error when using Nero 6, but very seldom get one with DVD Decryptor. Someone mention a while back that Nero has it's problems with verification. Whoever it was could they please elaborate?

If you get a verification error does it means the disc is bad?

Nero verification has issues. It often fails when the data is fine. I believe it to be flaws in the buffer system (temp files, virtual RAM, whatever it is) in use.

If you want to test discs, do a surface scan in Nero CD-DVD Speed. If you're feeling rather anal, you can also run kprobe, plextools, or dvdinfopro (which one you choose is based on your burner), and then read the PI/PO report and analyze it. And finally, just play the disc and see if it works or not.

Is it worth doing the file test as well as the surface scan? i do both when i burn masters.

I don't verify files, aside from seeing if the MB match up.
I rely on surface scans and my own two eyes.
And it doesn't hurt that I use only the best media (PVC).

Thanks LS, it is a little frustrating using Nero because I can take the same disc that had a verification problem, copy it and burn to disc and there is no problem. That is not the case if I have an verification error with Decryptor. There usually is a disc problem. What is PVC?

PVC is Pioneer media (Pioneer Video Company), no longer made. I stocked up, have a stash. Next best media is MXL, MCC or YUDEN.

Sorry, I don't trust MXL (Maxwell) unless it is made in Japan. The other two Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim have been great.

MXL is made in Japan, and nowhere else.
Don't confuse the manufacturer (MXLRGxx) with the brand ("Maxell").

I usually refer to media codes, not brands.
There is also no "w" in Maxell.

MCC is made in Japan is it? My Verbatim have the MCC code and they say they are from Taiwan.

Marcus he said the MXL "code" is made in Japan, He said nothing about the MCC code which we all know is now being used by brands like Verbatim and ProDisc , again I think you are confusing the two

MXL and PVC are not as common as the MCC and Yuden codes are in media these days, its one of the reasons they are in the upper eschelon of media

Generally for the MXL code you can find them in older 2005 stock of Maxell (Made in Japan), OLD TDK 2x DVD-R, and Apple's 8x DVD-R, old 1-2x Apple will also provide you with PVC code a lot of the time. Of course mass market tends to cater to the other codes as we all know from our recent purchases

MCC (Mitsubishi Chemicals Corp) is manufactured in Taiwan, in one of two plants. It used to be Singapore, but that plant is now reserved for RW and DL production.

MXL (Hitachi/Maxell) is manufactured in Japan

TY and YUDEN (Taiyo Yuden) is manufactured in Japan

PVC (Pioneer Video Corp) was made in Japan, before PVC closed.

TDK was made in Japan long ago, but is now all Taiwan. Has been for a while. It is supposedly made at one of the same locations as MCC.

Pioneer, TDK, Maxell, TY (as That's), and Mitsubishi (as Verbatim), all have their own brands, but also sell to other re-branders. Don't confuse brand with production. Maxell the brand also uses TY, RICOH, RITEK and others when needed. Same for TDK the brand and other brands.
