What is MKV File?

A friend of mine gave me an anime series called Shura No Toki. It is 26 episodes that he obviously downloaded somewhere that are in MKV format. They play fine with the codecs I have installed on my comp. The quality of the files is great and you can select between English and Japanese audio and if you want the subtitles on or off. What format is this?
How easy to transfer to DVD for atleast a mediocre set that I can watch on my TV instead of my PC.
Thanks.
