everybody go check your cables!!!

This is just a general reminder. Go look at your VCR, DVD recorders, capture cards. Be sure BOTH AUDIO PLUGS are COMPLETELY connected, not just one of them, and not just partially in the slot.

It's happened to me in the past.

And I just got some DVDs from somebody who was giving me source to make a set.

Luckily, I was able to repair my problems, as the cartoons were merely joint-stereo (mono to each speaker). I opened the audio files in SoundForge and copied the good channel onto the blank/bad one.

The other source I got from somebody else has some audio missing from the intro credits (nothing major, but noticeable when compared to my recordings), as it used true two-channel stereo, but luckily the cartoon itself was joint-stereo.

This also applies to you gusy with fancy JVC VCRs. Be sure your units are set correctly, and not on MONO or MIX. Leave it STEREO for your original recordings. Those other settings are for salvaging damaged audio from old VHS tapes only.

Don't blow this off, do it now, only takes a few seconds.

LS, I've got some dvds with just one channel (left) with audio, the right is empty/silent. I was thinking of extracting the files back to MPEG2, demultiplexing them to an audio file and video file. Then you say I can use SoundForge to copy the audio to the blank channel? Is SoundForge freeware/shareware?

Thanks!

Kevin

soundforge is not free...well... It could be LoL! Great software. You can remix the audio for sure. Resave as Mpeg if you get the plug in . Or save as wave. Up to you..

Padre, you must demux the MPEG files, convert the audio to WAV (use Besweet), open the WAV in SoundForge, copy the good channel over the blank one by double clicking on the good one and doing cut and then double clicking on blank/bad one and clicking paste, save the WAV, then use Besweet to convert back to AC3. Not really that hard, or that slow, I do it often, usually to restore hissy/imperfect audio.

Padre2, now that I have one of your cards, you should know that it is defective -- it was only recording audio from one channel! This is apparently a common issue with Hauppauge cards, from a certain point in time. Doh!
