Windows XP should pick up the driver . You can update the firmware from the manufactors website.

It shouldn't need a driver to see the drive. It may not see it as a DVD drive until you stick in a DVD. And then for playing video content, something free like the 'VLC media player' should work, or PowerDVD or WinDVD.

i'll second LS. WinXP has its own driver for the dvd-rom. no need for a specific sony driver.

but, if your pc cannot "see" the dvd-rom, then either the device is dead, or there is a conflict with it and another device.

is the drive a master or a slave?

see the "my computer" icon on the desktop? (if not go to start->control panel->system)
do a right-click then select properties.
then on the "system properties" dialog, select the "hardware" tab.
now select the "device manager" button.

see if there are any warning signs there. icon with an exclamation mark!
this might give you a clue as to whether the pc sees the dvd-rom or not.

hope this helps.

Be sure you're using an 80-pin IDE cable, that the jumpers are set correctly, and that the BIOS sees the drive.
