Kristen Stewart's notorious awkwardness with the press hit a new low when she compared to her red carpet photo ordeal to rape.

"The photos are so ... I feel like I'm looking at someone being raped," she says in the July issue of UK Elle.

The expected backlash was swift and fierce, with rape victims' advocacy groups criticizing the "Twilight" star's remarks. Stewart has since reconsidered her words.

"I really made an enormous mistake -- clearly and obviously," K-Stew tells People. "And I'm really sorry about my choice of words. I've made stupid remarks before, and I've always reasoned: 'Whatever. They can think what they want.''Violated' definitely would have been a better way of expressing the thought.

"People thinking that I'm insensitive about this subject rips my guts out," she adds. "I made a big mistake."

Stewart has done PSAs for the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN) and SOC after she played the victim of rape in her 2004 film "Speak."
