Unsecured PHP scripts on another account holder on the server led to the hacking. They gained system-level rights and damaged the server. More worthless human beings with too much time on their hands showing how they blight the planet.
Restoration was not 100% until early this morning. PHP and PLESK-based password-protection was the last to come back online. POP3/SMTP and MSSQL/ASP was the first, hence the early-on forum availability.
