I'm looking into buying an external hard drive, since my existing hard drive is filling up and I need to start putting files into storage. Having never gotten an external hard drive, I wanted to know if (A) there are any that are particularly good and (B) any brands that might not perform well.

I generally used to buy a USB 2.0 external case (Compusa or others), and put in a large capacity EIDE drive in it. But recently some of the 500gb Western Digital (USB2.0 External) have been getting very cheap, so I bought a few. I now have 4 - 500gb and 3 - 250gb externals drives.

I have a Western Digital 300GB USB2 drive that is awesome. It ran about $200 a year ago. You just need to make sure you use a USB2 card, and do not put it on a hub, plug it directly into the card.

I highly suggest buying pre-external drives, and not doing it yourself. So many things can go wrong, and often do.

Seagate and Western Digital are the only two to look at, forget everybody else.

Want a good deal? Look at Fry's Electronics or the online www.frys.com site.
