PC Problem Help-

We had horrible storms here last night, multiple power outages - and even with a UPS- I still seem to have a problem-

To sum up my stupidity-

When everything was done, i restarted-
And I am not sure what I hit but along side- the right of the screen, there were screen/display resolution options.
And I was scrolling down it- and I am baffled at what i hit- but of course I chose the WRONG one-and POOF black screen.

So I rebooted in safe mode- went to display/options and changed it-
but upon restarting, STILL black.

So in safe mode- (which I am currently in) with networking- I have it on 1024x768 which is fine, and was what I was normally using- its an older 21 inch monitor- nothing fancy.
But even at 800x600 after huitting apply and restart, nothing changes. Just black.

what am I missing here?

Have you checked the refresh rate? that usually makes a screen flicker if wrong... But that could be the problem?

Sounds like your monitor got fried. Or your onboard video.

Try a different monitor first.



Process of elimination.:

check your pc on another monitor.

If you get the samething. Your onboard video is toast.

IF it were something like a missing video driver. You would still able to display your desktop.

Just in 8/16 bit only though. Soooo.... I would say it 's hardware ...

You dont want to go through that. There 's the old denial process lol . Re install windows see if that fixes your problem :P

is your computer a custom build or is it a Dell, HP, Compaq or other?

IF YOU ATTEMPT THE FOLLOWING GO TO YOUR BIOS FIRST AND WRITE DOWN THE CURRENT SETTINGS

The reason I ask is that the BIOS may have got corrupted up and you may have to reset it, that usually involves unplugging the PSU from the wall then from your motherboard. Find the jumper that clears the CMOS and move it to the correct pins according your MB manual (if you have one) leave it that way for a few minutes then put it back in place, plug everything back in and reboot. Go directly to the BIOS and put time, date et. back to normal.

True , very true ... lol I suggested the simpler trouble shooting first
If savage is clueless on techie stuff. She wont know what to look for If she accidently puts the jumper in the wrong postion. Or pull the wrong jumper. as you know There are more than one jumper on a motherboard ...Which means . More problemos if not in the proper place

OK- the easier was to check the monitor with my other pc-
FIne - everything is peachy.
SO it isn't the montior

I uninstalled the video drivers, reinstalled-


But here is the thing-
When i log on in safe mode- and chenge the screen setting, its perfect
When i reboot
it goes BACK to the goofy settings
I did this 4-5x.
It wont KEEP the settings I put.
Even hitting apply.
It wont keep them, keeps reverting back.

Re install windows. You could have corrupt files in the registry.

Or need to re set bios as wheezer stated. Reboot press F2 I think for compaq. f10 for Hp, Delet for other computers .

use up dwn key to scroll. reset to default . save then exit.

reboot...


Wheez can walk you through the re setting of your jumpers on the motherboard... LOL

take 2 advils before attempting anything else. You will need it lol

CP, I think you have a brain tumor..... LOL, you always want to re-install windows for some reason If you only have a few apps on the system, or have an image of it, then that is one thing, but geez woman. By the way, making an image of you computers really is the best thing to do. Drive Image, Ghost whatever, really makes it nice for you later on

Savage what kind of computer do you have? if it is a custom build do you know what kind of motherboard it is?

I always clone my drive.. Although it's a bit small Re installing windows easier than t messing with the motherboard

Alsoooo.... If you have a bad sector on your HD. The Dsc image is useless. If It wont hold data :P Trrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrribble maker

Yes, but if you do it properly, it will tell you if you have a bad sector, also, you need to perfrom those checks before you make an image anyway....I am Cornholio! I need CP for my B*ng Hole!

I reinstalled windows- WOOF.
And I reinstalled the ATI drivers-

Everything s okey dokey now- thanks for the help---

I am now ghosting it, well in a minute

Can't thank you guys enough for the advice-

Now if I can just get a uninterupted power supply for ME!
