This is not shocking at all, been saying it since UMD was announced

A report in Daily Variety states that sales of movies on UMD for the PlayStation Portable are lagging, and that Sony, Paramount, and Time Warner are all cutting back on their offerings in the new format.

The only successful movies on the format seem to be TV comedy shows, especially those with brief sketches and stand-up routines. Beavis and Butthead was named as one of the more successful releases on UMD.

UMD isn't a failing format. It's actually doing quite well for a format that's only available for the PSP. I think once they start packaging the deals together, which will start with Sony, the DVD/UMD packs will sell nicely for 4 bucks extra. For the DVD 24.98 and for the bundle 28.98 so you'd be able to have both. So it's not a failing format.

Bundling a UMD with a DVD and charging $4 means you are making little to no money back on the UMD cost, that is a tactic to cover up the fact its not making the money they had expected.

The PSP is getting crushed overseas as well as in America and has not had the massive hit games they expected, that will probably change with the PS3 but its clear that the PSP is not the super cash cow that Sony was expecting, the fact that UMD had been met harshly by reviewers and fans (most people rather would use the memory card or the new HD to store movies not spend $25 to get 1 disc)

Trust me its a failing format, its just like the formats that came between CD and DVD. The fact that only Sony and its corp partners will build any kind of UMD reader in their systems means its going to keep it secluded exactly the same way Nintendo isolated itself when refusing to leave the cartridge format in the 90's and Sony wiped them on the floor with the onslaught of the CD revolution
