I need some suggestions as to which (brand) HDMI cables to buy. Which are the "best", and why?

Go cheap. Cheap, cheap, cheap. This assumes a short run, about 3 feet total. edDV at videohelp recently gave me some advise in this area, and he's pretty well versed in all things HD (professional broadcast background). Cables for about $5 here:

Unlike analog cabling, there is really no such thing as a "best" cable, aside from long run (greater than 6 feet), because of signal loss, as opposed to analog degradation. Loss and degradation are not the same (one is blank, one is there but looks crappy).

Monoprice was also suggested to me by two people.
