Writer Mark Evanier points out an effort to restore and complete an original, unpublished Superman story from 1940 which debuted the concept of "K-Metal," a radioactive chunk of Krypton that would strip Superman of his powers that would eventually be named "Kryptonite" in the Superman radio show. As of press time, 9 pages (out of 26) plus the cover have been restored.

Nice. Those old 1930s-1940s Superman comics are some of my favorites.

Well, I did a Google search, and came up with a couple of articles, and the restored pages!

SPOILERS BELOW! This article contains many SPOILERS to "The K-Metal From Krypton." If you haven't read the story yet and don't want to know what's going to happen in it, go back while you still can!

Conventional Supermanic History tells us that Kryptonite, Superman's one major weakness—a piece of mineral from his home planet—was created fully formed from the writers of the Superman Radio Show in 1943 and first appeared in the Superman comic books in 1949. It tells us that Superman never learned that he came from an alien planet—nor that said planet was named "Krypton"—until 1949. And it also tells us that Lois Lane never learned that Superman and Clark Kent are one-and-the-same until sometime in the 1990s.

If Jerry Siegel, who created Superman with Joe Shuster, had his way, all of these events, and more, would have occurred in 1940—but "The K-Metal from Krypton" was never published.

There are a number of other historical missing links revealed in this story. Any one of them, taken alone, would mark the tale as one of the most important historical finds in Superman's history:

It marks the very first time that editor Perry White's name, in any form, is used. Prior to this script, and in Jerry Siegel's plot synopsis of this very story, Clark's Boss was George Taylor. In the chronicles as they were published, the editor-in-chief's name was first presented as "George Taylor," then it evolved into "Taylor"—from there to "White" and finally to "Perry White." But this script reveals that Perry's first name was known far in advance of its actual first use in a published story, prior even to the lone "White."

The story also shows an important development in Superman's powers. Here, instead of merely "leaping," Superman is capable of "sky-jumps," an important milestone on his way to full flight capability.

But there are much larger changes that show this script to be the most important Superman story ever written.

In "The K-Metal from Krypton," as a meteor from Krypton approaches Earth, Superman learns for the very first time what it is like to lose his powers. He goes through confusion, pain, and emotional turmoil like none we have seen in later stories. He debates about whether or not to continue as Superman without his powers. And in a scene showing what truly makes Superman "Superman," he chooses to continue on with the name and costume even though, as far as he knows, he will remain forever without his Super-Powers.

He also learns, for the first time, that he comes from an alien planet; and that this mysterious substance must be from that same planet.

K-Metal itself, unlike the later variety of everyday Green Kryptonite, not only causes Superman to lose his powers—it also causes normal, non-powered humans to gain Super-Powers. This secondary feature of the metal would very rarely be used with Kryptonite in the comic books—generally only with animals—and would not gain wide-usage until the Smallville television show.

DC's Editorial Director, Whitney Ellsworth, had read the K-Metal script and was intimately familiar with its contents. Ellsworth was also producer, script editor, and frequent ghost-writer of both the Superman Radio show and the later Adventures of Superman television series. It's likely that 1940's introduction of K-Metal was the inspiration not only for various incarnations of Kryptonite in various media (the Radio Show, the comics, and Smallville), but that the plot concept of Superman facing emotional and mental challenges—internally debating with himself about his role and his feelings—in the face of an approaching meteor from space that has unpredictible effects on him was also used in the 1953 George Reeves episode, Panic in the Sky and in the later 1994 Lois and Clark episode, All Shook Up. In The Deadly Rock, a follow-up episode to the original George Reeves Panic in the Sky episode, a fragment from the Kryptonite meteor has arrived on Earth and effects not only Superman, but his friend Gary Allen. When exposed to this fragment of Kryptonite, Mr. Allen is impervious to all harm and is invulnerable to gunfire. In the episode, no explanation is provided for why an earthman should be effected by Kryptonite in this manner.

The not-necesarily unrelated idea of an approaching meteor presenting a threat from Superman's home planet was also obviously inspired by "The K-Metal from Krypton." This idea was re-used in many comic books stories (most recently in Jeph Loeb's introduction of the latest Supergirl) and served as the major plot element in the unproduced George Reeves movie, Superman and the Secret Planet. Planetoid-sized fragments of Krypton also played a role in the 2006 movie, Superman Returns, although the scenes were cut from the final release.

But these were not the only major changes to the legend.

"The K-Metal from Krypton" evolved the relationship between Superman and Lois Lane. Having completed his soul-searching and faced with impending disaster, Superman sacrifices his secret identity to Lois in order to facilitate her rescue. Not a hoax, not a dream—and not an imaginary story. For real. But rather than the reaction that one might expect, Lois isn't necessarily pleased at having been played the fool. Artwork by Joe ShusterThe implication, however, is that she would eventually get over her annoyance, and the story concludes with the two characters working together as a team to fight crime and corruption for the benefit of humanity, forever altering the dynamic of their relationship.


Alex Ross points out in Alter Ego #30:

Only two years into the development of the character, this story would have ended the love triangle that has been considered fundamental to the Superman legend for 60 years.

This would have been a turning point in super-hero reality. It's not only the simple idea that Superman shared his identity with Lois. It's that Jerry Siegel was taking steps to evolve the archetypal super-hero story beyond the repetitive dramas created by this personal obstacle, which kept the characters' relationship from maturing.

Instead, the mythology for Superman would have been much like the comic strips of the day in which the characters' lives developed in a way that mirrored real life—they had character growth, relationships evolved and changed, they grew older, etc. The prime example is Gasoline Alley. In that way, you write a story that moves things forward. It's obvious why the choice was made not to print this story back then, but the powers-that-were at DC were setting a precedent to be followed in all super-hero stories thereafter for decades to come. Who knows how well the history of comics would have fared with super-heroes whose lives changed as ours do? Watching our protagonist develop in this way might have engaged the audience on a more believable human level.

As Gerard Jones makes clear in Men of Tomorrow—that moment when DC pulled this story from publication was the same moment that the guiding control of Superman's destiny was forever removed from his creators.

He also points out that the events in this story had been foreshadowed in earlier ones, and gives details of possible sequels.

Joe Shuster and his studio illustrated the complete twenty-six page script, but the tale was never published, most likely for editorial reasons. Gerard Jones, in Men of Tomorrow, explains how this marked the moment that creative control of Superman's destiny was forever taken from Jerry Siegel. Jerry's K-Metal story was quickly forgotten and languished in obscurity; his desired changes to Superman never taking place until decades later, some not at all. Joe Shuster's twenty-six pages of finished artwork were lost as well.

The only evidence of the story's existence appeared in 1970, when a small, grainy and barely legible reproduction of four pages appeared in Jim Steranko's History of Comics, Volume One. However, neither the story nor its plot were mentioned, the pages were only identified as being from an unpublished Superman story.

Siegel's script continued to remain completely forgotten and the story's existence unknown, until 1988 when an ancient, faded, and blurred carbon-copy of the complete script was discovered in a dusty box in the back of the DC library archives by a young staff member named Mark Waid. Having read Steranko's History of Comics as a youth, he recognized the story as being that unpublished tale mentioned in the book. He immediately read the entire script and was struck dumb by its historical significance. He then restored the document by re-typing an exact duplicate, typos and all, on an identical manual typewriter as had been used by Jerry Siegel. (See Mark Waid's article in Alter Ego #26 for details)

Since the finished Shuster Studio artwork pages were no longer available; and whether or not they even existed anymore, or where any surviving pages might be located, were all completely unknown; Mark made efforts at DC to have the story re-illustrated and published. These efforts did not succeed.

In 1994, Mark Waid gave a copy of the script to Alex Ross who read it and was equally amazed. After the critical success that had come with his work on Kingdom Come in 1998, Alex felt that his next project should be to illustrate Jerry Siegel's K-Metal script in a style as close to Joe Shuster's as was possible. The idea was rejected for editorial reasons, so he instead created Peace on Earth. (See Alex Ross's article in Alter Ego #30 for more details)

In the summer of 2003, Mark Waid's article describing the K-Metal story and his experiences discovering it were published in Alter Ego #26. Accompanying the article were reproductions of a few pages of the original Shuster Studio artwork, and a handful of script excerpts. I decided to scan the artwork pages and put them online at the former Superman Through the Ages! website, with a goal of eventually recovering the other pages and presenting the complete story on the web. To fill in the missing gaps, I scanned the script excerpts from the issue, and then hunted down a copy of Steranko's History of Comics, Volume One in order to add the four pages of artwork that had been published in it.

Soon after this all went online, I was contacted by artist Angel Criado, who wanted to complete the story by illustrating the missing pages.

Angel began his work, starting with a pencil draft of the first page and a few cover concepts. I continued to add more pages of artwork to the site as new ones were discovered. One of the newly discovered pages had been published in Alter Ego #37 accompanying Will Murray's article, reproduced from a 1993 Sotheby's comic art catalog.

Peter Jones, who owns the original artwork for page 20, came across the Superman.nu website and discovered our efforts— so he kindly sent in a scan of his page, which I added to the partial collection.

Artists Bob Rivard, Shane Foley, Randy Sargent, and Jon Bogdanove all agreed to join the project. New artwork has been created where needed and original pages have been restored when possible.

Through the efforts of Charlie Roberts and Doctor Thomas Andrae, the artwork for page 7 was recovered; and Doctor Andrae also provided a copy of the original artwork for page 12.

We are thrilled to finally be able to present Siegel and Shuster's "The K-Metal from Krypton" in its entirety and we hope you enjoy reading the story as much as we enjoyed working on it!
