Thanked 1 Time in 1 Post
I just purchased some Maxell blank DVD-R media at staples for $17.94. The media ID is Ritek G05, should I keep the two other 50 packs I purchased or return them? Ritek has not historically been one of my favorites. What is the fail rate on them? The server for www.nomorecoasters.com is apparently down.

Ritek has never ever given me trouble. I'd keep them!

Yeah I have never had one bad Maxell RitekG05 yet (RitekG05 is the media code on the Made in Taiwan Maxell Gold discs).

I cant speak for the media code in general but the Maxell ones have always verified for me 100% both in Toast on the Mac and cdscan on the PC

I try and get the Japanese ones but I have at least went through 200 of the RitekG05 TW ones with no problem

I've been using Ritek G04 (and now G05) discs nearly exclusively for the past 2 years and rarely have problems. I've been getting the Ridata branded matte finish from newegg.com; haven't tried the Maxell branded though...

They were working just fine for me until just recently had a few discs to cause my Panasonic to go haywire (was shutting the recorder off and going into RECOVER mode), have since been using Sony brand dvd-r's and no problems, been using the Maxells on my PC, so I guess it depends on your recorder.

yeah that is always a factor, they work great in my BTC but my BTC does not like TY which we all know is good so its whatever works best for you. I dont tend to stick to just one media code either, usually its whatever Maxell is selling, Fuji, TDK and Verbatim are my 4 retail go-to's since they have never given me an issue and seem compatible with most things

If you have the Panasonic DVD recorder I think Sony is one of the brands that always seems to work, Brent had to switch to them I think in his as well

RITEK is generally a 2nd-rate media code. I would not use it for anything important, like masters or file backups. For copying discs, it would be fine. If they end up bad burns, at least they can easily be replaced.
