Which is generally better to use, a capture card or DVD recorder?
Right now I have an ati AIW capture card.
But this DVD recorder (Lite-On Progressive Scan 1-Disc DVD Recorder LVW-1107HC) is on sale right now, was thinking of trying it out.

I always prefer to use a DVD Recorder. Its just easier to use, and you dont have to worry about losing frames and all that stuff. The ATI AIW card is nice though I have one as well, but rarely use it anymore. I have two DVD recorders I use almost exclusively.

I use capture cards, almost exclusively. I use the Hauppauge line of Win-TV PVR cards. Record all my shows for me

I've moved to DVD recorders because they are generally being made by professional chip makers (LSI, for example), and have filters not found in capture cards. It all depends on what you want to transfer. For VHS, I especially would say the DVD recorder.

It totally depends on what you plan to transfer or record.

The DVD recorder is also more convenient. I have ATI AIW cards, and a half dozen DVD recorders. I use the recorders more. Only use the ATI cards for special needs these days.

Also let me know your budget. I have suggestions for quite a few things.

Well my budget is preferrable low for the moment. That is why I was asking about that Lite-On recorder above. Also I saw one yesterday For $150 that has dual layer capabilites, it was a lite-on also. Remember these prices are $cdn. This is just to get me started with a recorder. Maybe later I can fford one of the big cadillac models.
Thanks for all the input guys.

The Lite-On recorder that does DL is a nice model, my brother bought (I think the same one) at Best Buy last month and I have used it several times since then.

It can do 1,2,3,4,6,8 hour recordings...the only downside I have found is it lacks the FR modes that my JVC has so you can do say 2 1/2 or 3 1/2 hr records

But for an entry level low cost unit I would recommend it

Basically in the price range I have found a Toshiba (can't remember the model #), Samsung R130, Symphonic, and the Lite-on Dual Layer mentioned above. Now the Symphonic has a hard drive in it but doesn't get great reviews. DOes anyone have any experience with these brands? Recommendations?
As it goes for now I think I am inclined to go with Mark on the Lite-On DL unit.
Thanks.

Avoid Symphonic.
Toshiba is only really good at the "XS series" machines (hard drives).

I'd go with the LiteOn on this one. What is your budget, anyway?

My budget is I shouldn't even be buying a cheap one right now. So the Lite-on one and the rest I mentioned are about $150. I think I will buy that one for now.

Thanks.

Please remember i live in Canada, so that really means the $20 range for you US guys...
