VOB is an MPEG ... as well as other stuff.
You just need to DEMUX it.

If a commercial DVD, use VOBEDIT.
If a homemade DVD, use TMPGENC's MPEG TOOLS feature.

I heard, but never tried it, if you use Womble MPEG-VCR you can save the .vob file as an .mpg, but I never tried it myself.

yes - look for LSs how to on editing / reauthoring DVD - on digitalFAQ.com - pretty detailed how to on editiing out parts, saving vob to mpeg and reauthoring. BUT - given that he wrote it and didn't recommend it above maybe mpeg-vcr is SOOOO last week! I think it does a good job and will save the vob to mpeg really fast too - like 2-4 minutes for an average file
